Until watching this film I hadn’t really thought of Helvetica as a Marmite font (i.e. you either love it or hate it) I thought was a reaction was solely reserved for Comic Sans*. I stand corrected. The film show how passionate designers, especially font designers, can be about a typeface, and in this film the interviewees either loved Helvetica or hated Helvetica.

Helvetica is an independent feature-length documentary film about typography and graphic design, centered around the typeface of the same name. Directed by Gary Hustwit, it was released in 2007 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the typeface’s introduction in 1957.

Unlike with Marmite and Comic Sans, I remain firmly on the fence when it comes to Helvetica… but I am adding Objectified (also directed by Gary Hustwit) to my ‘geeky films to watch’ list. And inspire by the photography in the documentary I feel mini photography project coming on.

* although I am yet to met a designer who likes Comic Sans.
